About
This is not a traditional blog site where I write about things that happen to me on a daily basis, things I do or things I see and experience, it is also not a general archive of photos I have taken during my lifetime. The purpose of this blog is to share images that I have taken in China, scenes that I find interesting, humorous, harsh, whimsical and sometimes downright mad.
I also have another photo blog http://moreimagesfromme.wordpress.com this site concentrates on images taken in other countries (not China), if you have time please take a look, make a comment and follow if you like what you see and want to join me on my other photographic journies around the world 🙂
I was born and bred in England… I moved to China and settled in Shanghai around 10 years ago, during that time I have had the opportunity to travel around China and witness massive change, some for the good and some for the bad. I love Chinese Culture, the Language, Chinese History, its people, its cuisine, its architecture; old and new and especially the faces of the people on the street. I love to wonder the streets of Shanghai interacting with the people whilst trying to capture the essence of this wonderful place, its rapid growth and ever changing landscape. I also have a passion to breathe clean air, get out into the countryside, to experience the peacefulness, the tranquility and the massive differences between life in bustling Shanghai and the more remote corners of China.
China is a truly wonderful place, rich in beauty, full of surprises, wide on contrast, extreme in every sense of the word, breathtaking, industrial, rural and frustrating for some.
I do hope you enjoy the Images posted here on this blog..Speaking of which..All Images are the copy write of Mark Lawrence and they should not be copied or used in any way without my permission, If you would like to purchase or use any of the Images from this site please contact me through email.
Thanks
Mark

Hello there! I stopped by to let you know I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award! You can check out my post to view your nomination!
Thanks so much 🙂
A wonderful eclectic collection. I particularly enjoy the B+W work, although I like everything I’ve seen, so far. Thanks for the Follow and the various image Likes on jmnartsy.com.
Thanks and your welcome 🙂
Love your photos!!
Thanks so much Sherry:)
Really enjoyed looking through your various photos, great work here … never been to China, yet oddly obsessed with all things China!!??! I’m a Kiwi living in Bali.. Is it an easy place to live as an expat?
Hi Tanya, I guess like everything it depends on who you ask! For me, it’s great but like most we all have our good China days and our bad China days. You know, people say ‘The grass is always greener on the other side’ but in my experience this is only short lived 🙂 I try to make the most of my life’s journey, I truly love everything Asia and will continue to do so whever my travels take me. You are blessed with the beauty and the warmth of Bali, i guess this inspires you too?
Yes you are so right about good days and bad days… same applies here. But I love Bali and very happy here. Also, its very easy for expats here, Im guessing language could be a bit of a challenge there, especially the written.. street signs for example ! Thanks for the reply, and Ill look forward to your future posts and beautiful photos !
Your very welcome, take care..Mark
Brilliant blog Mark! Some of the B& W pictures are simply stunning (A Nap in the Sun especially!)
I lived in China in 06 and 07 (Xingtai, Hebei) and seeing these photos really takes me back. I went back for a visit in 09 and found whole blocks had become building sites, and my favourite market was now a shopping centre with a Dicos. Wonder if I’d even recognise the place now!
Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!
Hi Kevin, Cheers for your feedback, it is appreciated and thanks for your kind words of inspiration too:)..If you came back now you would certainly not recognise it, construction and re-generation is everywhere most of which goes on 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Thanks again and take care, regards Mark
Very interesting blog, i like Your approach Mark!

Hi there – where are you – in England, or Shanghai? The reason I ask is that there’s an exhibition by a French photographer that’s absolutely stunning and is running in Shanghai into June. Check out The Global Art Junkie’s site: http://theartjunkie.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/alain-delorme-manipulated-totems/#comment-863
for details – or just to check out the work. Wish I could see it. Hope you can instead:)
Sorry, I only just saw this message, I’m in Shanghai, I may go if i have time, thanks for sharing.
Regards
Mark
You’re welcome Mark. It looks like thrilling stuff and I would love to see it – the next best thing has to be passing the info on to someone else who might get a thrill … 🙂

Regards
Hi Ricardo,
Thank you so much for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger Award, however on this occasion I will have to decline because I have already received three nominations for that specific award and accepted one, plus I have also received two other award nominations this week of which I have still not had time to reply too 😦
I am certainly grateful to you and flattered to be nominated but these awards are very time consuming and i would rather focus my time on trying to upload more images to my blogs and interact with my fellow bloggers.
Thank you once again for your nomination.
Kind Regards
Mark
Hi, Mark.
No problem at all. I understand You, it takes long time to write the article but your link blog still remains on my nominated blogs, because it’s more than deserved. Ok?
Kind Regards, my friend. Have a nice day and a awesome weekend (almost there). 🙂
Thats ok, thanks again Ricardo 🙂

Thank you for following Journeys Through Grief! Your blog is very interesting. .
Hello! Thanks for checking out my blog and following. I’ve just been having a look at yours and I have to say, some of your photos are just amazing. They are so much different than those taken by someone who is just “passing through” so to speak and far more diverse than the usual photos taken by tourists and travel writers. I really love them!
Thank you so much Heather, your kind words are appreciated so much 🙂
Hi Mark,
I just nominated you for One Lovely Blog award. I’ve been a fan of your photos on both of your blogs since I started blogging. Details are here: http://lushview.wordpress.com/2012/07/26/one-lovely-blog-award/ . I believe you’re well deserved.
Regards,
Ming
Hi Ming,
Thank you so much for nominating me and my blogs https://reflectionsofchina.wordpress.com and http://moreimagesfromme.wordpress.com for this lovely award, your nomination and following of my work is really appreciated. I do however not participate in these blog awards due to the time it takes to reply and re-nominating fellow bloggers of which I admire so many.
Best Regards and Thank you again
Mark
Hi Mark,
I want to say how glad I am that I found you (thank you for stopping by my blog and signing up to follow a fellow traveler). I love good photography and am intrigued that you ended up in China. I’m from England, too, but ended up in Hawaii, which, as you may know, has a large Asian population and influence thanks to the former sugar plantations, which imported laborers from China, Japan, the Philippines and more. I’m really looking forward to diving into your photos and seeing China through your eyes. And perhaps even visiting there one day (with more knowledge about the country thanks to your work). I’m assuming you speak and write Chinese now?
Hi Jennifer,
I came to China about 14 or so years ago through business, spent a lot of time here, sold my company in the UK, fell in love with my soul mate and never went back. My spoken Chinese is not bad but reading and writing leaves a lot to be desired!
May and I spent a couple of weeks this year on the big island of Hawaii, we loved the spirituality and peace there and thoroughly enjoyed Mauna Kea and Kilauea.
Lets keep in touch.
Regards
Mark
Isn’t it remarkable what journeys we find ourselves on.
I’m glad you’ve had a chance to experience the Big Island. It is indeed a very spiritual place—one of my favorite places. In fact, my new novel takes place in part there. Once it’s out, I’ll write a post. I think you might enjoy it.
Yes, let’s keep in touch.
Aloha,
Jennifer
I will look forward to it 🙂
Regards
Mark
